Empty its Mind to Rethink Art
Founded in 1959 by André Malraux, then Minister of Culture and a renowned writer, the Paris Biennale was conceived as a frame to experiment with new modalities of future art.
Over the decades, the Biennale has unveiled some of the greatest artists of the 20th century, including Joseph Beuys, David Hockney, Christo, Nam June Paik, Yves Klein, Gina Pane, Marina Abramovic, Christian Boltanski, Josef Kosuth, Anselm Kiefer, and Valie Export. The Biennale was also a pioneer in presenting photography and video art—once seen as mere techniques—as art forms.
As we entered the 21st century, the Paris Biennale distanced itself from the rigid frameworks of contemporary art to explore new forms of art, representing as many hypotheses for possible futures. The Biennale envisions art as a broader concept than merely producing art objects, seeking to redefine it according to new criteria.
The Paris Biennale is not confined to Paris. It relocates around the world, adopting a model that identifies and activates potentials within their local contexts. The aim is to go beyond the traditional model of exporting western art, working directly with territories and their specificities, thereby highlighting innovative proposals.
The Paris Biennale will take place to Bangkok from February 21 to 28, 2025.
